| Lord Mayor calls meeting to tackle drugs problem |
A MEETING of the Joint Policing Committee will take place on Monday, July 6 at City Hall to discuss the growing drugs problem in Cork city.
Speaking in advance of the meeting Lord Mayor, Cllr Dara Murphy, said, “Chief Superintendent Liam Hayes will attend, as well as members of our own City Council Housing & Community Directorate.
“We also hope to have doctors involved with drugs users attend, as well as councillors, TDs and other community groups and stakeholders.
“We will be asking what the City Council can do to help the Garda Siochána in their efforts and also what help do we at City Council need from the Gardaí.
“There is extremely good work ongoing at the moment and the Joint Policing Committee has been very active in tackling problems.

| Nymphenburg Palace |
The Nymphenburg Palace dates from the 17th century and was built to celbrate the birth of Max Emanuel, the heir to throne. The palace itself was extensively modified throughout the 18th century. In the 19th century the gardens were transformed from the more formal French style into the English style.As well as the main palace, seen here from the rear, the grounds contain a number of other palaces and pavilions commissioned by the royal family. | AIB Debt Buyback |
I’ve been looking into the AIB debt buyback program, details of which were announced on Monday (Irish Times story here.) Why in God’s name would I be doing that during a rare sunny week in this country? Well, between the state guarantee and NAMA, pretty much everything the banks do these days has implications for the taxpayer, so it’s worth taking a look at. That and the fact that I’m a nerd. Wonky corporate financey post below the fold.
On the face of it, the announcement looks like good news. AIB get to replace €2.4 billion of one type of debt with €1.3 billion of a different kind of debt. (Full gory details here.) | December launch date for Freeview HD |
The BBC has announced that high definition broadcasts on digital terrestrial television will commence in December. Meanwhile here in Ireland we still havent even got standard definition digital terrestrial tv – what a joke!
The plan to launch HD services on a reconfigured version of what is presently known as multiplex B will see Freeview HD – initially comprised of high definition services from the BBC, ITV and Channel 4 – will roll out across the UK in tandem with digital switchover starting with the Winter Hill transmitter, which serves Manchester and Liverpool. Regions that have already switched to digital will be reconfigured retroactively.
